In human anatomy, the biceps brachii muscle (commonly referred to as simply “The biceps”) is a muscle which is situated on the upper human arm. The biceps muscles have several functions which they undertake on a regular daily basis. The most important job of the biceps brachii muscle is to rotate the forearm in a movement which is known as supination and the other important job is to flex the elbow. The term “Biceps Brachii” is a Latin phrase which means “Two-headed muscle of the arm” and this is in reference to the fact that the muscle itself is made up of two bundles of muscle each of which has its own point of origin although they both share a common point of insertion close to the elbow joint. The plural form of the biceps in Latin is bicipites but this term is not used in general English use. Instead of this term, the English term used to describe the plural of the Biceps Brachii muscle is “ Biceps” essentially meaning that we use the word for both singular and plural purposes.
Upon examining the Biceps Brachii muscle found in cna training, it is found that the short head of the muscle attaches to or originates from the scapulas coracoid process. The long head of the muscle has its tendon pass along the intertubercular groove of the human humerus into the capsule of the joint at the head of the humerus and there it joins to the scapula and the supraglenoid tubercle. In the distal manner, the Biceps Brachii muscle attaches or inserts into the radial tuberosity. Due to the fact that the ulnar and the radial bones have the ability to rotate about one another the muscle is able to supinate the forearm with a great deal of power. The muscle also connects on the medial side of the forearm to the fascia by way of the bicipital aponeurosis. There are two extra muscles which are located under the biceps brachii muscle. These muscles are the coracobrachialis muscle which also attaches to the coracoids process of the scapula and the brachialis muscle which has a connection with the ulna and also a connection along the mid shaft section of the humerus.
The Biceps muscle works across three joints; the proper term for this is tri-articulate. The majority of these functions are to supinate the forearm and flex the human elbow. These three joints are the Proximal radioulnar joint, the Humeroulnar joint (elbow) and the Glenohumeral joint (shoulder). Despite popular belief, the biceps are not the most powerful flexors of the human forearms. The deep set brachialis muscle is the true bearer of that title. The biceps brachii functions mainly as a strong and worthy supinator of the forearm. In order for this to occur the elbow must be flexed at least partially. The muscle is also an important forearm flexor especially when the forearm is in a supinated position. This action can be seen every day when doing activities which require the lifting of an object. The muscle also provides a weak assistance is flexing the shoulder forward and also stabilization of the shoulder joint in the event of a heavy weight being carried in the arms.
