Important definitions on Ecology.

Ecosystem: It is the biotic community and its non-living environment as an interacting system. A functional unit of nature.

Biosphere: It is defined as that part of the earth and atmosphere in which many smaller ecosystems exists and operates. It has three subdivisions Lithosphere, Hydrosphere and Atmosphere.

Population: It is defined as a group of related individuals capable of interbreeding.

Pollution: It is an undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air, land and water which affects life adversely, either directly or indirectly.

Ecotone: It is a zone integration between ecological communities.

Ecological Pyramids: A triangular graphic form showing numbers of individuals, biomass or available energy at successive tropic levels in the ecosystem.

Halophytes: These are those plants which grow in aquatic habitats like lakes, ponds, rivers and seas. These are of two types
1. Free floating plants           2. Submerged floating plants

Helophytes: Helophytes are the plants of bright light loving. These plants can grow in bright light; plants can survive only when the total energy harnessed in photosynthesis exceeds that used in respiration. The intensity of light at which energy harnessed through photosynthesis is just sufficient to meet the energy requirement of respiration is called light compensation point.

Brackish Water: The content of dissolved salts in brackish water is higher that the fresh water and ranges between 0.5 to 35%. These waters of intermediate salinity range are distinct from fresh or marine waters. In estuary, which represents the tail end of liver, mixing of fresh water with the seawater results in brackish water? The salinity in an estuary increase from upper middle to lower reaches and at the month of the estuary the salinity is nearly equal to that of sea.

Marine Water: The sea water is highly salty. The average salinity of sea water remains almost constant at 35 parts of salt per 1000 parts of water by weight and written at 35% some salt lakes may also have salinity between 25% to 35%. The biotic activity in such habitats is great restricted.

Endangered Spices: A species is considered endangered when its number are so few or /and is homeland is so small, that it may become extinct if not given special protection.
